Glossary
6 terms used across our articles and technical documentation, defined without jargon.
E
- Encapsulation efficiency
- The fraction of total payload that is successfully entrapped within the carrier rather than free in solution.
- Enhanced permeability and retention (EPR)
- The tendency of macromolecules and nanoparticles to accumulate in tumour tissue because of leaky vasculature and impaired lymphatic drainage.
L
- Lipid nanoparticle (LNP)
- A self-assembled vesicle of ionizable and helper lipids that encapsulates nucleic acid cargo for intracellular delivery.
P
- Polydispersity index (PDI)
- A dimensionless measure of particle size distribution width. Values below 0.1 indicate a monodisperse, reproducible formulation.
T
- Transfection
- The process of introducing nucleic acids into cells by non-viral means, typically with lipid, polymer or inorganic carriers.
Z
- Zeta potential
- The electrokinetic potential at a particle's slipping plane, used as a proxy for surface charge and colloidal stability.
